CAT tourniquet is an emergency hemostatic tool used to temporarily control major bleeding. It is made of a wide and flexible woven strap, usually constructed from polyester fiber or nylon material. The CAT tourniquet features a spiral-style fastening mechanism that can be tightened by twisting a lever.
To use the CAT tourniquet, first place the tourniquet above the bleeding site and snugly against the skin using your hand. Then, thread the tourniquet through the looped segments of the fastening mechanism, ensuring that it is securely tightened. Next, secure the tourniquet in the emergency hemostatic position using a fastening device, typically a plastic buckle.
Once locked into place, gradually increase pressure by rotating the lever on the fastening mechanism until the major bleeding stops. This will compress the blood vessels, preventing further blood loss. After applying the CAT tourniquet, it is important to promptly transport the casualty to a medical facility where the wound can be further assessed and treated by healthcare professionals.
